40. Valerie Waterhouse: Malachi Whitaker’s Yorkshire

Born in 1895 in Bradford, Malachi Whitaker was a celebrated author, lauded by the likes of Vita Sackville-West and Stevie Smith. She published prolifically, and the BBC aired over 50 broadcasts of her stories. But her work has not always received the attention it deserves.

Now, Whitaker’s 1939 memoir of life in Bradford on the cusp of war is finally being republished. Join Whitaker’s biographer Valerie Waterhouse for a discussion of this exceptional, overlooked Yorkshirewoman and her writing.
