Summer Friend Reception with Rob Cowen
Want to attend? Become a Friend of the Festival!
Enjoy refreshments with the Ilkley Literature Festival team from 6pm, then from 6.30pm be the first to hear about highlights from the upcoming Autumn programme and hear from our special guest, award-winning author, North-Yorkshire neighbour and outdoorsman Rob Cowen.
Hailed as one of the UK’s most original voices on nature, place and people, Rob has won the Roger Deakin Award from the Society of Authors and been shortlisted for the Portico, Richard Jefferies Society and Wainwright Prizes. His second book, Common Ground, was voted one of the nation’s favourite nature books of all time in a BBC poll. His writing has been praised by fellow nature writers Robert Macfarlane, James Rebanks and Raynor Winn.
Rob will be discussing his new book, The North Road. At the heart of this book is a highway. The A1; The Great North Road. A 400-mile multiplicity of ancient trackway, Roman road, pilgrim path, coach route and motorway that has run like a backbone through Britain for the last 2,000 years. Rob will discuss how he has followed this ghost road from beginning to end on a journey through history, place, people and time. Weaving his own histories and memories with the layered landscapes he moves through, he tells the story of an age, of coming to terms with time past and time passing, and the roads that lead us to where we find ourselves.
Places at the reception are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. To be sure of your place, please make sure you RSVP as soon as possible
